Join our team as a Financial Crime Controls Consultant and play a key role in protecting the organisation through the independent review and authorisation of high-risk customer relationships and financial crime decisions.
In this role, you will provide effective challenge, oversight, and assurance across complex AML (Anti-Money Laundering), sanctions, and financial crime investigations, ensuring outcomes are risk-based, evidence-led, and aligned with regulatory requirements, internal policies, and the Society’s risk appetite. You will be responsible for assessing high-risk cases, identifying potential control weaknesses, and delivering clear, well-reasoned decisions that support both risk management and fair customer outcomes.
Working closely with operational teams and senior stakeholders, you will use your financial crime expertise to influence decision-making, share best practice, and drive continuous improvement across the control environment. Strong stakeholder management skills will be essential, as will the ability to provide constructive challenge while building effective working relationships across the business.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced financial crime professional with a strong background in AML, sanctions, enhanced due diligence, or financial crime investigations. An ICA (International Compliance Association) qualification (or equivalent) is desirable, combined with proven investigative experience and the confidence to challenge effectively while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.
We are happy to consider flexible working approaches to help you perform at your best.
At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.
For this job you'll be located at our nearest regional office or hub. There will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration and in some locations you’ll be expected to spend at least two days a week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, in the office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works.
If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.
Responsibilities
What you’ll be doing
As a Financial Crime Controls Consultant, you will oversee and approve high-risk customer relationships in line with the Society's delegated approval matrix, ensuring decisions are risk-based, evidence-led, and aligned with regulatory requirements.
You will present complex cases and recommendations to senior stakeholders through appropriate governance and review forums while maintaining up-to-date subject matter expertise in financial crime to support informed decision-making.
The role involves conducting evidential gathering with both stakeholders and customers to support customer risk classification decisions, as well as providing input into the development and adaptation of processes in response to the evolving financial crime regulatory landscape.
Working closely with operational teams, you will identify process inefficiencies, champion continuous improvement opportunities, and support business change initiatives to ensure the organisation remains well-positioned to manage customer risk effectively. In addition, you will contribute to internal and external audit reviews and engage confidently with stakeholders to provide insight, challenge, and assurance where required.
About you
As a minimum, you will have:
- Proven, recent AML experience within either a 1st or 2nd line function, with a strong understanding of financial crime frameworks

- The confidence and credibility to influence at a senior level, with strong stakeholder management skills that foster effective and collaborative relationships
- Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, well-structured reports that articulate findings and support robust decision-making
