An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Deputy Payroll Manager to join our Payroll team. This is a key leadership role where you'll support the delivery of a best-in-class payroll service, ensuring compliance, accuracy and exceptional colleague experience. As the payroll subject matter expert, you'll play a leading role in payroll-related projects, support strategic change initiatives, and deputise for the Head of Payroll and Benefits when required.

For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at our Swindon office.

Responsibilities

  • As Deputy Payroll Manager, you'll play a critical role in ensuring the successful delivery of payroll operations while supporting the wider strategic objectives of the function.
  • You'll act as the subject matter expert for payroll, leading payroll-related projects and providing specialist guidance on complex queries, compliance requirements and legislative changes.
  • Working closely with internal stakeholders across People, Finance and Tax, as well as external partners including HMRC, auditors and third-party providers, you'll help ensure the payroll service remains accurate, compliant and continually evolving.
  • You'll oversee payroll reconciliations, reporting, controls and audit activity, while supporting system enhancements, business continuity planning and change initiatives.
  • In addition, you'll lead and develop a team of Payroll Specialists, promoting a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration and exceptional service, whilst deputising for the Head of Payroll and Benefits when required.

About you

We're looking for an experienced payroll professional who combines technical expertise with strong leadership and stakeholder management skills. You'll be comfortable operating in a regulated environment and confident navigating complex challenges.

  • Significant payroll experience, including a strong understanding of payroll legislation, controls and compliance requirements.
  • Proven experience leading or developing teams and driving continuous improvement initiatives.
