We’re offering an exciting opportunity for an experienced Controls Manager to join Nationwide’s Finance, Risk & Controls team—an influential function at the heart of safeguarding the integrity of our regulatory and critical reporting. You’ll be part of a team that provides independent first‑line assurance across the full reporting lifecycle, from data sourcing right through to governance and submission, giving you exposure to some of the organisation’s most important processes. In this role, you’ll play a pivotal part in strengthening the effectiveness of reporting controls across a complex, high‑profile landscape.
You’ll be accountable for driving high‑quality, insightful testing activity and providing clear, constructive challenge to senior stakeholders, helping shape how Nationwide manages risk. Leading a team of talented controls professionals, you’ll oversee assurance across a population of circa. 600 regulatory and critical reports. Your expertise, judgement, and robust risk mindset will be key to continuously enhancing Nationwide’s reporting control framework and influencing meaningful, organisation‑wide improvements.

For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon, London, Northampton or Glasgow office.

The Controls Manager is responsible for leading a team to deliver the annual independent testing plan for regulatory and critical reports, ensuring outputs are high‑quality, well‑evidenced, and clearly communicated. The role oversees all stages of testing—from planning and walkthroughs to execution, review, and reporting—while maintaining alignment with the organisation’s wider risk and control framework. It requires effective stakeholder engagement, providing challenge, communicating issues, and supporting effective remediation.
The manager must also assess how regulatory, system, or organisational changes affect the control environment and adapt testing approaches accordingly. Overall, it is a hands‑on leadership role requiring sound judgement, collaboration, and the ability to influence senior stakeholders.
The minimum requirements for this role are:
- Extensive experience of controls testing, audit or risk management within a regulated environment
- Demonstrate a deep understanding of control design and operating effectiveness, process and risk analysis, and assurance methodologies
- Be confident interpreting and applying risk policies and control frameworks
- Bring a proactive, inquisitive mindset, with the confidence to challenge existing processes, drive continuous improvement and advance efficiency of control activity
- Possess excellent communication and influencing skills, with the ability to engage, manage and challenge senior stakeholders
- Be proficient in the use of Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) systems, with the ability to adapt quickly to in-house tools
