As the Physical Security Manager, you will lead an ambitious, well-respected, and fast-paced team responsible for delivering physical security control and risk management maturity across the Nationwide Group. You will have experience of leading and delivering day-to-day operational support, guidance, and advice to colleagues with regard to all aspects of physical security, ensuring policy is adhered to and risks managed appropriately and proportionately. The Physical Security team, part of the wider Security & Resilience team, has the mission to monitor and assess the physical threat landscape (e.g. terrorism, civil unrest, and organised crime) in order to drive timely and effective response operations and support operational resilience. The team maintains physical security policy and control standards and provides SME physical security consultancy services to business areas, either as part of Business As Usual (BAU) operations or in support of Change initiatives.

Working alongside the Head of Incident Management and the wider Physical Security team, you will be a strong influencer in a mindset shift in the department and the wider organisation on physical security threats by providing day-to-day operational support, guidance, and advice to staff with regards to all aspects of physical security, ensuring policy is adhered to and risks managed appropriately. You’ll be leading on alignment with government and industry objectives and standards and liaise with senior stakeholders on how these objectives and standards can be met while ensuring that Physical Security policies and security controls employed remain appropriate and proportionate to the assessed risks and are responsive and adaptable to the changing threat environment and business requirements.

You’ll also be the primary point of contact on Physical Security issues with key stakeholders, including external parties, and actively develop strong working relationships in relation to Physical Security. Additionally, you will be an active member of the UK security community and work with industry peers and associations to drive best practice, and be responsible for review reporting, including key performance indicators, and act as a key decision maker for the delivery of Physical Security services against requirements.

You will regularly combine external threat information, organisational context, and situational awareness to provide a holistic threat understanding capability. You’ll then communicate tailored threat information and situational awareness to relevant stakeholders up to ExCo and provide expert advice and guidance on physical and counter-terrorist security matters including supporting development of training and awareness material. In doing so, you’ll become a ‘go to subject matter expert’ in the provision of physical security consultancy advice.

You’ll regularly provide expert advice to the investigation and resolution of any physical security breaches, ensuring lessons learnt are documented and communicated, and control failures corrected and enhanced. Furthermore, you’ll ensure the embedding of a federated physical security risk and control ownership, including oversight of remediation activities. You will also lead the maturation of the physical security governance, risk, and controls framework and establish and build key working relationships with colleagues within the security and resilience department and key business areas, in particular frontline colleagues and Property Services, as well as externally with peers and law enforcement.

The suitable person will have, or be able to demonstrate:

  • Established knowledge and experience in a corporate security or related environment
  • Strong understanding of physical security and risk, as well as a willingness to develop knowledge in these areas as appropriate
  • Knowledge of approved physical security products and build standards
  • Demonstrable experience of working closely with operations and programme functions to establish proportionate/optimum physical security infrastructure solutions to identified risks appropriate for application in a UK-based corporate headquarters environment
  • Experience in operational response planning for physical security incident/emergency & crisis situations
  • Experience in designing and undertaking site physical security assessments, including threat identification, risk assessment, evaluation of physical security controls, and assessment against government and recognised industry standards and frameworks
  • Strong analytical and communication skills with proficiency in taking complex/technical subject matter and refining/presenting to the business at any level to result in understanding and appreciation
  • The ability to prioritise workloads and work to tight timescales
