We’re looking for an SAP HANA Database Engineer to join the Core Banking Enablement value stream within Core Banking CIO and help deliver change across Nationwide’s SAP landscape. You’ll use your HANA database expertise to design, implement and enhance secure, resilient and high-performing database platforms that underpin some of Nationwide’s most critical business services. Our SAP HANA databases support large and complex S/4HANA platforms used across Nationwide’s Core Banking services.
Working across strategic programmes and platform transformation initiatives, you’ll contribute to database installations, upgrades, migrations, performance improvements and the implementation of backup, recovery, high-availability and disaster-recovery capabilities. You’ll work closely with SAP Basis engineers, architects, infrastructure teams, application specialists and delivery teams to ensure database solutions are designed effectively and meet Nationwide’s technical, resilience and control requirements.
At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected. For this job you'll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you'll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon, Bournemouth, Northampton or London office.
What you’ll be doing:
- As an engineer within our SAP Basis team, you’ll deliver technical change across Nationwide’s SAP HANA database estate, supporting critical S/4HANA platforms and Core Banking services.
- Your work will include database installations, upgrades, migrations, patching, system copies, performance engineering, capacity planning and the implementation of resilient database solutions.
- You’ll analyse database performance and resource usage across large, high-volume environments, identify bottlenecks and work with application teams to optimise SQL execution, memory consumption, data distribution and overall database efficiency.
- You’ll design and implement backup, recovery, high-availability, disaster-recovery and database security capabilities that protect the availability and integrity of Nationwide’s critical SAP services.
- This will include SAP HANA System Replication, recovery testing, secure connectivity, certificate management, auditing and encryption across data volumes, redo logs and database backups.
- You’ll use Ansible to implement infrastructure as code, automate HANA installations and configuration, and standardise deployments across multiple SAP landscapes.
- You’ll work closely with architects, infrastructure teams, application specialists and delivery teams to design, build, test and implement secure and resilient database solutions.
About you:
We’re looking for an experienced SAP Engineer with a strong background in SAP HANA database administration and engineering across large, complex and business-critical environments. You’ll understand the important role HANA plays in supporting Core Banking and S/4HANA platforms, and how the database integrates with SAP applications, Linux operating systems, storage, backup technologies and high-availability infrastructure. You’ll enjoy solving complex technical problems, analysing database performance and delivering significant platform change. You’ll be comfortable working across engineering and delivery teams, communicating technical information clearly and taking ownership of database solutions from design through to implementation.
You’ll have:
- SAP HANA Database Engineering: Proven experience administering and engineering SAP HANA databases supporting large-scale, business-critical SAP and S/4HANA landscapes.
- Database Lifecycle Management: Hands-on experience with SAP HANA architecture, installations, configuration, upgrades, patching, migrations, system copies, refreshes and ongoing platform maintenance.
- Performance, Capacity & Optimisation: Experience analysing and improving HANA database performance through SQL optimisation, memory management, capacity planning, table partitioning, Native Storage Extension (NSE) and performance tuning.
- Resilience & Data Protection: Strong knowledge of SAP HANA System Replication, high-availability and disaster-recovery architectures, backup and recovery strategies, point-in-time recovery and recovery testing.
- Database Security & Compliance: Experience implementing SAP HANA security capabilities including auditing, encryption, certificate management, secure connectivity and compliance with enterprise security standards.
- Automation & Infrastructure as Code: Experience using Ansible and scripting to automate SAP HANA deployments, configuration, patching and operational activities, helping standardise and improve the efficiency across SAP platforms.
- Monitoring HANA DB: Experience administering and monitoring SAP HANA databases using SAP HANA Cockpit, IBM Guardium, and similar enterprise monitoring tools, ensuring database performance, availability, security compliance, and operational stability.
