The Business Banking Control Team exists to enable safe, sustainable growth. We are committed to driving risk excellence and are passionate about proactive risk management in the first line of defence. We are starting an exciting journey to grow our team, and this role has been created to join our Business Banking Controls team to ensure the effective management of a complex and varied risk profile. As a Risk & Control Specialist, you won’t just maintain the profile, you’ll shape it. You’ll partner with senior stakeholders across Business Banking to strengthen the control environment, embed risk awareness and lead to meaningful change in how we think about risk within the first line of defence.

At Nationwide, we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK-wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected. For this job you’ll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you’ll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our London or Northampton office. If you are aligned to our Glasgow hub (as this is your nearest location), there will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events. This is anticipated to be weekly in Glasgow.

If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

You’ll be employed by Nationwide from day one, delivering real impact and benefitting from a highly competitive range of benefits. We’re a workplace where you’re rewarded, recognised and celebrated.

What you’ll be doing:

  • You’ll be acting as an advisor to senior business leaders, embedding a strong control environment that supports Business Banking objectives while maintaining risk integrity.
  • You’ll be embedding the Business Banking risk and control profile and maintaining a continuous improvement approach to the ongoing management of the profile.
  • You’ll be supporting the business in the identification, logging and management of issues and events, ensuring this is regularly monitored and reported to the Senior Leadership Team, as well as ensuring robust validation and supporting evidence is in place to confirm the effective closure of issues and providing appropriate challenge to senior stakeholders where standards have not been met.
  • You’ll also translate policies and risk appetite into operational action, ensuring controls are practical, sustainable, and outcome focused and engage with key stakeholders professionally and with integrity to generate productive working relationships at all levels of seniority.

About you:

  • Experience of working with or knowledge of Business Banking products and services.
  • A solid understanding of risk and control environments within a complex business.
  • Proven ability to design, implement, and monitor effective control frameworks.
  • Excellent commercial acumen — you’ll understand how risk management adds value, not friction.
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management and communication skills, with the confidence to challenge senior leaders constructively.
  • Knowledge of regulatory and business practices for Commercial products.
