The role focuses on shaping and implementing governance mechanisms within Protect, our First Line Economic Crime function, ensuring they effectively manage identified business risks. You’ll take ownership of key elements of the Governance and Control Framework, providing challenge, advice and oversight to drive continuous improvement. As part of the team dedicated to safeguarding Nationwide and its customers from economic crime, you’ll work within the wider Governance, Risk and Control group, ensuring operations align with policies and meet all legal and regulatory obligations.

For this job you’ll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you’ll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon, Northampton, Bournemouth, Dunfermline or London office. What you’ll be doing:

  • Lead the design and maintenance of robust governance mechanisms that help detect, prevent and disrupt economic crime.
  • Embed ownership and documentation of Protect’s processes, working closely with business areas to strengthen and improve their control environment.
  • Support teams to demonstrate compliance with internal policies and to deliver positive customer outcomes.
  • Manage the development of management information, ensuring reports are accurate, consistent, and provide senior leaders with clear insight into performance, risks, and issues.
  • Monitor actions to ensure problems are resolved promptly, with clear accountability and documentation.
  • Deputise for the Senior Manager Governance and Control representing the team in senior committees, leading meetings and contributing to strategic projects.

About you:

  • Proven experience in developing, implementing and managing governance and control frameworks within a large-scale operation in a risk or compliance role.
  • A strong ability to interpret risk policies and assess compliance effectively.
  • Skilled in documenting, implementing, and maintaining control frameworks to ensure operational integrity.
  • Demonstrable experience in producing high-quality risk and control reports for senior leadership.
  • A solid understanding of financial services regulations and legal frameworks, including codes relevant to economic crime prevention.
  • The ability to remain objective and act with independence in decision-making.
  • Excellent organisational skills with strong planning and time management capabilities.
