Environment Engineering Lead
Location: Swindon or London
Salary: Up to £75,000
Working within the Environment Engineering Practice teams, you will collaborate with others to build the best solutions for Nationwide’s Environment estate. Using your technical, Project management leadership skills and SME knowledge, you will offer advice/consultancy, build systems, and work on automation and release engineering to solve problems and provide solid capabilities. You will play a critical role in ensuring the stability, performance, and scalability of Nationwide’s IT services and infrastructure by working with SRE and Environment Practice lead.
As an Environment Engineer lead, you will be responsible for delivering Nationwide’s \’Route to Live\’ test environments. You and your team will provision and manage test environments that enable the safe, secure, and efficient delivery of IT changes to Nationwide’s live services, while ensuring the release engineering approach is supported by automation. You will play a significant role in protecting Nationwide’s brand and reputation by providing representative environments that maintain the availability and performance of live services for our members.
This role is within the Environment engineering practice of the Chief Operating Office, which is responsible for creating and maintaining the environment/infrastructure solutions exploited by our colleagues to deliver technology services to our Members.
This role will be a natural point of escalation and will foster a learning culture, based on continuous improvement. You will work closely with stakeholders across Nationwide’s Technology Transformation and Delivery teams working with an Agile mindset and will exhibit the behaviours of an Agile Leader while encouraging the team to embrace and adopt agile values and principles where appropriate.

For this job you\’ll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you\’ll spend 40% of your working time, based in either Swindon or London. What you’ll be doing
You will oversee the execution of the Enterprise Environment Strategy and manage the provisioning of Nationwide’s Non-Production Environments. You will be a key resource for delivery teams, providing the right environments that accurately represent Production services.
You will provide leadership to environment partner teams embedded in delivery communities, ensuring environments are used efficiently, governing the provision and recovery of on-demand environments, and facilitating the efficient co-existence of releases in shared environments.
About you
You will be an experienced Environment Management professional with a track record of delivering environment services and managing partners. As a minimum requirement you will have a strong understanding
- Strong Project management, people leadership, line management and organisational skills
- Experience in engaging and influencing a range of stakeholders, to communicate technical concepts and use of storytelling to explain the business value of effective and secure environment management.
- Demonstrable technical understanding of IT Environment Landscapes and the tools used to manage them
- Knowledge of DevOps CI/CD tools such as Ansible, GitHub, and Harness is preferable but not mandatory.
- Knowledge on Test data management
