You will be joining the Economics team within our Finance function at Nationwide. The team’s role is to provide economic analysis and advice to decision makers, to support financial planning and stress testing activities and to highlight and analyse emerging risks and opportunities. This is all to help keep Nationwide’s finances sustainable, so that the Society can provide the best service possible to its members, now and in the future.

This is an exciting role that will involve developing and maintaining the team’s statistical models, as well as assisting with the production of economic analysis and forecasts. It is well suited for those that have experience in model development or recently completed or about to complete a PhD with a high econometric content that are looking to apply their knowledge in a business context.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job you\’ll be located at our nearest regional hub. There will be a need to regularly connect with colleagues for collaboration events in one of our office sites. This is anticipated to be quarterly in our London or Swindon office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.

What you’ll be doing

This is an exciting role that will allow you to develop, maintain and improve our statistical models (mostly econometric models), which are used to forecast key economic and market variables (e.g. house prices and savings market). By using statistical software, such as Eviews, and managing and analysing data in software packages such as Macrobond (no prior knowledge is assumed as training will be provided), you will ensure that all models are well documented and compliant with required model standards.

You will gain a deep knowledge of the wider economy and UK household sector, but analysing and monitoring data to provide insights into developments. By working as part of a team to produce economic and market forecasts you will effectively communicate the rationale for projections by presenting results and drafting convincing narratives for inclusion in forecast documents and reports. You will also have the opportunity to produce research on topics of relevance to the business to be shared with key stakeholders.

About you

As well as a flair for statistics and economics, you will need to have good communication skills and the ability to convey complex ideas to non‑specialists. Our team works closely with other areas of the business, so an ability to win trust and build relationships across Nationwide would be an advantage. We are also looking for someone with an awareness of and interest in financial services as well as the wider economy.

Requirements

As a minimum requirement you’ll have:

  • A master’s degree in economics/econometrics or related discipline with a high econometrics content, or be on course to (or have achieved) a PhD in such a discipline

  • Advanced knowledge of statistical software such as Eviews, SPSS, Stata, R, or others
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
