The role
Working within the Object Conservation team at the Museum’s Prince Philip Maritime Collections Centre (PPMCC, Kidbrooke) and reporting to the Object Conservation Manager, the Object Conservator contributes to the day-to-day operation of the Object Conservation studio.
The Object Conservator will undertake conservation treatment and preservation of the National Maritime Museum’s diverse collection of three-dimensional objects, with a focus on the metals collection, in accordance with conservation professional standards and ethical guidelines for the purposes of display, loan, public engagement, or condition need. Key responsibilities include the conservation treatment of metal objects (& other 3D objects) and the continued development of specialist expertise in conservation of scientific instruments, operating/working objects and large objects (e.g. anchors, cannons). The post-holder will be expected to maintain accurate conservation records and documentation of condition and treatment in accordance with conservation professional standards and departmental procedures.
The successful candidate will have a recognised professional qualification in metals or object conservation, or equivalent experience in the conservation of historic metal objects. They will have developed their depth of knowledge and practical experience through several years of professional practice. Prior experience in the practical conservation of scientific instruments, operating/working objects, or large objects is desirable. The postholder should have a sound understanding of COSHH requirements for conservation, alongside a flexible and proactive approach to work, good organisational abilities and good computer skills.
This is a permanent, full-time role in Band 5 – Management and Proficient Specialists. Core hours of work will be 36 per week, 8am-4pm, Monday to Friday, with an additional hour to be worked as agreed upon with management.
Salary: £36,900 per annum
