Advisor – Policy & Strategy (Secondment Feb‑Oct 2026)

Join the National Wealth Fund (NWF) as a Policy Advisor. The NWF is mobilising private finance to support the UK government’s Industrial Strategy, clean‑energy transition and economic growth.

Job purpose

As a Policy Advisor you will shape the strategic direction of the NWF and work across the fund to deploy its capital base, ensuring it delivers the ambitions of HM Treasury.

Key accountabilities

  • Build and maintain relationships with key public‑sector stakeholders (government departments and devolved administrations) to understand and influence policy developments.
  • Lead development and implementation of the NWF’s new investment mandate and finance solutions.
  • Collaborate with teams across the organisation, external stakeholders and government departments to deliver investment programmes that support the Industrial Strategy, clean‑energy and growth missions.
  • Produce policy papers on emerging thinking and trends for the Executive Committee and Board.
  • Contribute to strategy development, annual business planning and the next strategic plan.
  • Appraise individual investment proposals against strategic objectives, supporting due‑diligence processes on transactions.
  • Support wider work to establish an influential and integrated policy and strategy function.

Sector focus – Steel

  • Engage the UK steel sector, covering primary producers, scrap/material providers, downstream users and innovative firms.
  • Monitor HMG policy on steel with DBT, DEFRA, HMT and other departments.
  • Assess investment opportunities and develop financing solutions for major HMG projects.
  • Stay abreast of developments relating to UK Government assets.
  • Ensure financing for steel as part of NWF’s ÂŁ5.8 bn commitments is deployed.
  • Collaborate with the Department of Business and Trade, Scottish Government, Scottish National Investment Bank and Scottish Enterprise.

Sector focus – Critical Minerals

  • Lead policy for critical minerals, coordinating with Whitehall and ensuring ministerial priorities are understood.
  • Act as deal lead on projects, scoping new opportunities such as synthetic materials.
  • Build a network of stakeholders across the critical‑minerals industry.

Key dates & conditions

Duration: Paternity cover from February 2026 to October 2026. Hybrid working – two days a week in the Leeds office.

Deadline to apply: 30 November 2025. Salary: Secondment on current terms and conditions.
