NATIONAL VETERINARY SERVICES LIMITED JOB DESCRIPTION โ€“ Haematology Job Title: Laboratory Scientist Reports to: Head of Department Department: Haematology Business unit: NationWide Laboratories Prepared by: Sandra Wells Date: January 2026 Main purpose of the role The role of Laboratory Scientist is focused on supporting the department in striving for customer service excellence in internal and external activities. They should support the team in ensuring that all initiatives are fully implemented and that role model/ambassador behaviour, values and beliefs are adopted across the department. A Laboratory Scientist should be able to work effectively as a key team member to maximise the overall service delivered and supervise the Assistant Laboratory Scientist where necessary. A flexible โ€˜can doโ€™ approach is essential for this role. Key Responsibilities Routine processing of blood samples, including making and staining blood smears. Routine fluid processing and slide preparation for Cytology. Use and maintenance of the Advia 2120 haematology analyser for processing of blood samples Blood smear review Performing Elisa tests and Coagulation Use of slide scanner to produce digital images for pathologist interpretation. Sample reception Reception and booking in of stock and reagents. Maintaining and correct use of Laboratory equipment. Use of the LIMS system for result entry and data checking. Adherence to and maintenance of written Standard Operating Procedures Laboratory. general housekeeping Responsible for delivering their assigned areas of work, liaising with the Section Head and colleagues as necessary. Ensures that internal and external quality control requirements are met. Works flexibly and collaboratively. Adopts role model behaviour, values and beliefs. Personal attributes: Qualifications, experience, skills, knowledge and competencies required to fulfil the role Excellent attention to detail. Qualified to A level, Btech or above. Minimum 1 year practical laboratory experience Demonstrates a good understanding of the important elements of laboratory diagnostic testing. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal. Strong organisational skills. Computer literate. Highly customer focused. Highly motivated. Questions practices and improves. Performance and quality. Team player.
