The Role

We are seeking a Road Transport Manager to lead and oversee our transport operations across the UK. This is a pivotal position responsible for ensuring that all transport activities are conducted safely, legally, efficiently, and in full compliance with Operator Licence conditions and UK transport legislation. The ideal candidate will be an experienced leader with a deep understanding of transport compliance, fleet maintenance, and driver management. You will play a key role in promoting safety, performance, and professionalism across our driver network while ensuring operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure full compliance with all transport legislation, including Operator Licence obligations, vehicle roadworthiness, and driver hours regulations.
  • Maintain accurate driver documentation (licences, CPC cards, right‑to‑work records) and carry out regular validity checks.
  • Oversee vehicle safety inspections, maintenance schedules, and prompt defect rectifications.
  • Supervise driver performance, scheduling, and adherence to working time and tachograph regulations.
  • Plan and monitor daily transport operations to achieve maximum efficiency, compliance, and profitability.
  • Lead, coach, and motivate the driver team, supporting training, performance reviews, and development.
  • Collaborate with Compliance, HR, Safety, and Planning teams to meet operational and safety objectives.
  • Maintain and update all vehicle and operator records, ensuring insurance, MOT, and calibration documentation are current.
  • Monitor and report on key transport KPIs including driver scores, fuel efficiency, and load turnaround performance.
  • Drive a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement within the transport department.

About You

  • Proven experience in a senior transport or fleet management role (CPC qualification essential).
  • In‑depth knowledge of transport legislation, Operator Licence compliance, and driver hours regulations.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, with experience managing driver teams.
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments to achieve operational goals.
  • A proactive, solutions‑focused mindset and a commitment to safety and performance excellence.
