Responsible for diagnosis of the gynae and non-gynae samples by evaluating and interpreting the cells from patient samples. To assist in the supervision and maintenance of daily operations in the pathology laboratory.
Job Responsibilities
- The senior cytotechnologist should work independently and/or under the guidance of the pathologist and other health care professionals.
- Liaise with other departments to assist and ensure the smooth workflow in the laboratory.
- Maintain a safe working environment by ensuring compliance with local health and safety legislation and following recommendations of bodies such as NCCLS and OSHE.
- Ensure department’s compliance with good laboratory practices as set out by the Laboratory Accreditation Program of the College of American Pathologists and Singapore regulatory agencies such as the Medical Audit & Accreditation Unit.
- Participate in the primary and secondary diagnostic screening of the gynaecological and non-gynaecological samples.
- Provide FNA services for the specialists’ clinics, radiology/endoscopy department and wards.
- Assist and/or take initiative in contributing to quality improvement in clinical service.
- Supervise daily distribution of workload.
- Participate in quality control procedures, including the external quality assurance programs and to maintain high quality standards.
- Assist in trouble shooting and problem solving of all quality control and operational matters.
- Ensure that all enquiries and problems are handled in a courteous and professional manner.
- Must be proficient in the use of LIS (EPIC), the laboratory informative system.
- To ascertain professional competency by maintaining high levels of concentration required to provide good quality service.
- Maintain all required log books/sheets for routine QC checks in the laboratory including staining, mounting, labeling and equipment maintenance.
- Familiar with and responsible for regular checking and updating of the laboratory Quality Assurance and Procedure Manuals.
- To support and assist in the training of resident pathologist as well as to actively participate in the training program for newly recruited Cytotech's.
Job Requirements
- Degree in Biological/Life Sciences preferred.
- Possess a valid IAC (International Academy of Cytology) certificate in gynae and non-gynae Cytology or a recognized Cytology certificate from a recognized institution.
- 5 years of work experience with a degree, or 8 years of work experience in a Cytology laboratory preferred.
- Able to work independently and as a team member.
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities.
- Possess excellent organizational and communication skills.
