Assistant GIS Data Officer Paths

We’re looking for an Assistant GIS Data Officer (Paths) to join us at the National Trust on a fixed-term basis until 26th January 2026. You’ll join the dedicated National GIS Data Team, working to create organisational value from data and ensuring it’s trusted, understood and well governed.

As this role will require travel between different places, some of which are located in rural areas, please consider how you’d get there before applying.

What it's like to work here:

You’ll join a new team of Assistant GIS Data Officers based around the regions in England and Wales and travel will be required to the places we care for within your designated area. This is an opportunity to develop your GIS capabilities, gain experience working with open data and demonstrate a dedication for countryside access. As this is a national role, there is flexibility on your contractual place of work. Alternative regional hubs include: Grasmere, York (Goddards), Newcastle and Altrincham. Our hybrid working policy means you can balance office and home working with many site visits at other National Trust places. We’ll talk about this in more detail at interview, but you should expect to be at a National Trust site for 40–60% of your working week.

What you'll be doing:

Working as part of the GIS Data Team within our Strategy Management Unit you’ll be jointly responsible for managing key datasets, including ownership and access data. The role will include a substantial element of GIS data editing and data maintenance as well as communication with countryside and property staff, and members of the GIS Data Team. You’ll be working in a small remote team, liaising with Area Rangers to verify and digitise promoted walking trails on land we look after. Each trail will be tagged with detail about their physical attributes following a schema, and outdoor furniture assets may also be recorded. The resulting spatial dataset will be used by property staff to provide improved access within the countryside and help ranger teams with maintenance tasks. It will also enable the Trust to provide the public with a tool for planning walking routes.

Who we’re looking for:

• An understanding of GIS concepts and digitising spatial data
• Knowledge of data capture and quality assurance processes
• Enthusiasm and interest in countryside access, with a basic understanding of UK Public Rights of Way
• Organisational skills with an attention to detail
• Strong communication and engagement skills
• The ability to work both collaboratively and independently to solve GIS problems
• Practical experience using ArcGIS or OpenStreetMap, especially in digitisation and data capture
• Experience of working to defined data quality standards and data validation procedures
