About us
Biosciences is one of the world’s foremost centres for research and teaching in the biological sciences and one of the largest Divisions within UCL, undertaking a significant amount of research and teaching. The Division has a diverse portfolio addressing all areas of biology from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies and the environment. Computational modelling approaches are frequently used alongside experimental research programmes and much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, including the relationship of biodiversity to the health of the planet. Activity is underpinned by high calibre science technology platforms and state of the art equipment. Educational activity includes a range of undergraduate programmes, an expanding number of Masters Programmes and a substantial number of postgraduate research students.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Biosciences Research Department of Structural and Molecular Biology (SMB) as a core funded Research Technician.
You will become an active member of the Department and assist in delivering our ambitious research programmes by providing general and specialist lab support for the timely delivery of our research objectives.
About the role
The main purpose of this position is to provide multi-specialist technical support within SMB laboratories. The post holder will have responsibility for managing, coordinating and supervising the delivery of core technical support for laboratories working with mammalian and insect cell culture in a Containment Level 2 (CL2) environment. They will work closely with the SMB Technical Manager, group leaders and researchers across SMB to assess the technical and operational requirements associated with research needs. The role will include oversight of shared cell culture facilities, ensuring compliance with relevant health and safety, biosafety and regulatory requirements, maintaining high standards of laboratory practice, and supporting the effective operation of CL2 laboratories. The post holder will be responsible for implementing new systems and procedures where required, maintaining a good working knowledge of Faculty, Divisional and UCL policies and procedures, and ensuring these are applied consistently across supported laboratories.

About you
You must have an MSc/Level 7 qualification in a relevant Biological Sciences subject or equivalent experience, substantial experience in supporting mammalian and insect cell culture within a Containment Level 2 (CL2) environment, and proven experience in the operation and management of laboratory equipment and infrastructure (including user training, maintenance, troubleshooting and lifecycle management), particularly equipment supporting cell culture and associated molecular and cellular biology workflows. Experience in management of Health & Safety in a laboratory environment and in holding significant H&S responsibilities is also desirable.
