National Star is recruiting extra special people to join its committed team of care and support workers helping young people with complex disabilities to make the most of their time at college and to live life as independently as possible. The students we support have a wide range of learning and physical disabilities. Like other young people of the same age, many of them love fashion, listening to music, shopping, watching sport and socialising with their friends.
As one of our care and support workers, you will be a key member of a multi-disciplinary team, providing personalised care to enable students to access their lessons and realise their aspirations. We are looking for some people with a care background but would also like to encourage those with no experience to come forward as we offer a comprehensive induction and training programme and will help you to achieve your qualifications in health and social care. People with previous experience in retail, administration and hospitality have made a successful transition to become care and support workers at National Star. Due to the need of our students and residents, we are only looking to recruit female Care and Support Workers.
We offer opportunities to complete fully funded level 2 and level 3 qualifications in adult social care, learning support and team leader (supervisor) should you wish to. What matters most is that you support our values and can demonstrate the potential to develop in this role and have a positive attitude toward the aspirations of young people with disabilities.
Key tasks involve:
- Delivering all aspects of personal care including washing, dressing, personal appearance, toileting, mouth, nail, and foot care and feeding.
- Provide support in the classroom or other learning environments, working closely with a specialist tutor.
- Plan, organise and support high quality leisure activities. This may involve trips into the community, visits to the cinema, pubs and restaurants or simply helping a student to pursue their favourite hobby or sport.
- Help record student progress against their personal goals.
- Liaise with family members, enabling a student to speak to parents, friends and family and providing updates on activities and progress.
- Administer medication to residents in line with policy and procedure, after receiving relevant training.
A large number of students at National Star live at college during term-time. As a care and support worker, you will be allocated to a specific residence which includes our off-site service Bradbury Gardens located near Pitville Park in Cheltenham, so you get to know a small group of students really well, helping them with their daily routines. There is nothing more rewarding than seeing the progress a student makes towards independence!
