The National Portrait Gallery is one of the UK’s most celebrated cultural institutions, uniquely dedicated to telling the stories of the people who have shaped, and continue to shape, the nation. Founded in 1856, it is home to the largest and most prestigious collection of portraits in the world, connecting audiences with history, culture and identity through its Collection, exhibitions, research, learning programmes and digital activity. Through its work, the Gallery welcomes over 1.5 million visitors annually and continues to extend access to the nation’s stories, both within the building and around the world.

Following the completion of the transformational Inspiring People project, the most significant redevelopment of the Gallery since the opening of the building in 1896, the Gallery is now entering an exciting new phase of ambition, growth and innovation.

The National Portrait Gallery is now seeking a Chief Operating Officer to join its new Executive Leadership Team, reporting directly to the Director and working alongside the Chief Curator, Chief Financial Officer and Chief Development Officer. This is a pivotal role, providing strategic leadership across the Gallery’s operational infrastructure while helping shape its future direction.

The COO will lead major transformation, technology and estates programmes, strengthen organisational capability and culture, and drive an ambitious digital and audience strategy that enables the Gallery to connect with people in new ways, both within the building and far beyond it. The role calls for an exceptional executive leader who is able to combine operational excellence with strategic vision, and who can translate ambition into the systems, culture and capability needed for long-term success.

The successful candidate will bring experience of leading transformation in complex organisations, modernising infrastructure, harnessing the potential of digital innovation and building a high-performing, inclusive working culture.
