Job Details

Salary – £28,500.00 per annum

Full time – 40 hours, 5 days per week (Monday – Friday) 22 months FTC

Role Purpose:

The National Portrait Gallery houses a unique collection of all forms of portraiture of the people who have made or are currently contributing to British history and culture; the collection is the most comprehensive of its kind in the world. With around 2 million visitors each year prior to temporary closure for the Inspiring People project and a strong national and international presence through touring exhibitions and special projects, the Gallery is one of the country\\\’s most important and popular galleries.

We are looking for an organised, self-motivated and enthusiastic individual to work with the National Portrait Gallery as well as Nottingham City Museums and Galleries to curate and promote a national touring exhibition on the theme of migration.

This exhibition will foreground the migration stories and valuable contributions of people who have settled in the UK since the 16th century. Through portraits spanning five centuries and which are drawn from the two museums\\\’ collections, the exhibition will look at the varied reasons for migration. It will explore how leaving home and finding a new one can present new opportunities as well as huge challenges.

This is an exciting opportunity for an aspiring curator to develop their skills in the museum and gallery sector as an Art Fund Curatorial Trainee. You will support the work of the National Portrait Gallery\\\’s Senior Curator of 19th-Century Collections in the development and delivery of the exhibition, including writing interpretation for the artworks going on display, making design choices, installing the exhibition at the partner venues, and leading tours and talks.

You will be based at both the National Portrait Gallery and Nottingham City Museums and Galleries, and will be expected to travel to other tour venues.

Key Experience, Skills and Criteria:

Qualifications and Experience

• An undergraduate qualification in the humanities, or demonstrable equivalent experience
• Relevant experience within a museum, gallery or heritage environment or demonstrable transferrable skills and interest

Skills and Attributes

• A demonstrable interest in British art, history and portraiture
• Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage a number of tasks simultaneously
• Excellent administrative skills
• Strong IT and keyboard skills and a high level of competence in Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook (including electronic diary)
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to read situations quickly, identify a suitable approach and respond promptly and appropriately
• Excellent English and writing skills, for example drafting minutes and writing labels
• Ability to convey key information clearly, accurately and succinctly
• The post holder must be able to prioritise the work including responding quickly to requests for information
• A confident, professional and measured approach to work and the ability to work flexibly and meticulously under pressure
• Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with colleagues across the National Portrait Gallery and the tour partners
