This full-time Research Scientist job comes with a generous salary and benefits package. As a Higher Scientist, you'll be expected to acquire new knowledge to find solutions to advance our research. If commercial opportunities arise from your work, you'll need to flag these – as this is how new products and services are born.
At NPL, we learn from each other, respect each other, and work together to do better for ourselves and our customers. Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Sharing your learnings so that we all benefit and mentoring those with less experience than you
- Developing partnerships to strengthen our capability
- Acting as an ambassador for our work externally and being willing to promote what we do
- Providing technical support for any bids we may be undertaking
Put simply, we set the standards by which everything is measured. In doing so, the National Physical Laboratory is helping to combat issues on a global scale such as climate change, curing diseases and the development of cutting-edge communications technology. At NPL, we touch ordinary lives in extraordinary ways, and you could too.
Research sits at the very core of our business. This is your chance to make an impact on our ground-breaking work as you apply your established knowledge and solutions to a range of technical activities. As we're always looking to stretch our capabilities, we'll look to you to spot potential commercial opportunities and to help raise our profile as and when you can.
We work as a team here, so any learnings you do make, we'll expect you to share to support in our continued development. Naturally, you'll keep your technical knowledge up-to-speed with the latest advances and take responsibility for completing your work to the highest standards, on time and within budget.
The role requires at least a graduate degree or a post-graduate research degree in engineering, physics or a science-related field, preferably with interest and some knowledge and experience in at least one of the following areas:
- Rydberg quantum sensing, communications and signal processing
- Cryogenic 4K on-wafer probing, RF and microwave measurements
- Experience in RF and microwave on-wafer measurements, preferably under cryogenic conditions
- Expertise in commissioning, operating and maintaining cryogenic systems such as dilution refrigerators with some experience in guided RF and microwave measurements
- Experience on non-linear RF measurements and RF noise measurements
Ideally, the candidate should have a theoretical and practical understanding of electromagnetics and quantum sciences, expertise in measurement calibration, strong scientific problem-solving skills, proficiency in report and paper writing, and the ability to generate creative ideas in an R&D environment.
Work within established Health and Safety, and Quality systems to safely produce accurate and repeatable results. Good spoken and written communications skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds to help us achieve our goals. Ability to plan and deliver against agreed time, cost and quality needs. Evidence of the ability to complete work that requires a high level of attention to detail. Enjoy problem solving and can demonstrate critical thinking, assessing the pros and cons of your approach.
At NPL we learn from each other, respect each other and work together to do better for ourselves and for our customers. And whilst we're always looking to stretch beyond what we know, we don't make things more complicated when there's no need.
We actively recruit citizens of all backgrounds, but the nature of our work in specific departments means that nationality, residency and security requirements can be more tightly defined than others. You will be asked about this throughout the recruitment process. To work at NPL, you will need to obtain a minimum of BPSS security clearance.
Please note: Applications will be reviewed, and interviews conducted throughout the duration of this advert therefore we may at any time bring the closing date forward. We encourage all interested applicants to apply as soon as practical.
