About the Role
Join the team shaping the future of quantum communications. We are seeking an exceptional Senior/Principal Scientist to join the Quantum Information group within the Quantum Technologies Department. This is an opportunity to contribute to research with national impact at the frontier of quantum photonic and quantum‑secured technologies to build the next‑generation quantum networks.
In this permanent role, you will help define the scientific vision and technical roadmap for quantum networking, shaping both the research direction and the broader impact of NPL’s quantum network testbed. You will work closely with colleagues across NPL as well as global research and industrial stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead strategic direction and cutting‑edge research across quantum networks, including their design, operation and testing.
- Identify pathways to commercial impact and cultivate a strong network of customers, collaborators, and industrial partners.
- Work with the science leadership team to shape NPL’s long‑term vision for the scientific and commercial impact of the quantum network testbed.
- Lead and develop high‑performing, multidisciplinary teams.
- Establish and sustain collaborations with internal groups and external partners.
- Raise NPL’s visibility through publications, conferences, and external representation.
- Lead successful bids aligned with NPL’s and national strategic growth priorities.
- Champion inclusive, collaborative working practices.
- Represent NPL externally and promote our quantum capabilities.
About You
You will thrive in this role if you bring deep technical expertise, leadership capability, and a passion for pushing the boundaries of quantum science and engineering.
Essential Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience and leadership in quantum photonic technologies.
- PhD (or equivalent experience) in experimental physics, engineering or hardware development.
- Post‑doctoral experience in a relevant field.
- Track record of leading and building multidisciplinary teams.
- Rigorous, analytical problem‑solving skills.
- Curiosity and a collaborative mindset.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications
- Leadership and publication record in a relevant scientific area.
- Experience with quantum network hardware or quantum memories.
- Experience in commercial or industrial environments.
- Experience collaborating with industry, academia or NMIs.
- Evidence of translating innovation into industrial impact.
- Track record of securing competitive funding.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary research.
