Job Overview

NPL is recruiting a Senior Engineer for the Mass Metrology Group.

The role requires a strong scientific or engineering background with a track record of delivering impactful research, innovation, or technical projects.

The candidate should be collaborative, driven, and able to lead within their field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and validate novel measurement instruments, including a Kibble balance and servo‑hydraulic force machines.
  • Develop, test, and validate a novel electro‑magnetic Kibble balance using a seismometer principle to derive the SI unit of mass via the Planck constant.
  • Transform the proof‑of‑concept Kibble balance into a reliable facility capable of delivering the UK mass scale and serving as a reference instrument for other national laboratories.
  • Advance Kibble balance technologies to create instruments for micro‑force, torque, and precision weighing.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of physics, instrumentation, error budgets and precision measurement systems, with a degree or higher qualification in a relevant subject.
  • Curiosity and drive to learn and apply new knowledge.
  • Experience working on complex technical systems (e. g., instrumentation, research facilities, bespoke engineered systems), applying cutting‑edge innovation and transitioning concepts through to operation.
  • Strong data analysis skills and experience with Python, MATLAB, or COMSOL, and creating robust uncertainty budgets.
  • Experience developing, integrating and testing software and hardware within a systems engineering process.
  • Expertise in laser interferometry, electro‑mechanical and/or opto‑mechanical control, motion systems, vibration control, PID control loops, precise low‑noise voltage measurement, or FPGA programming.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills to explain complex technical concepts to stakeholders.
  • Entrepreneurial approach, spotting opportunities and engaging stakeholders to refine and deliver solutions.
  • Working towards or holding Chartered Engineer or Scientist status with a relevant Institution is desirable.
  • Security Clearance
