Join the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) to work on advancing VHEE radiotherapy, a cutting‑edge frontier in cancer treatment. This PhD offers the chance to develop a national dosimetry framework that will underpin future clinical practice.

About the Role

As a PhD student, you will conduct experimental measurements using large‑area integrating detectors—calorimeters and ionisation chambers—at leading VHEE facilities in the UK and Europe. You will work closely with NPL scientists, develop Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations, and refine dosimetry protocols aligned with national and international standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design and execute experimental measurements with integrating detectors in the 50‑250 MeV energy range.
  • Collaborate with NPL scientists and external partners on data collection and analysis.
  • Perform Monte Carlo simulations (Geant4, FLUKA, etc.) to support experimental results.
  • Validate and optimise dosimetry protocols for use in modern VHEE delivery techniques.
  • Prepare technical reports and present findings to research groups.

Qualifications

  • First‑class or upper‑second degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Medical Physics, Radiation Physics, Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Solid understanding of radiation physics and dosimetry principles.
  • Experience with laboratory measurements, instrumentation, and data acquisition.
  • Proficiency in Monte Carlo simulation tools (Geant4, FLUKA) and data‑analysis languages (Python, MATLAB).
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving and communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel within the UK and Europe for experimental campaigns.
  • Motivation to advance cancer‑treatment technologies.
