Join to apply for the Service Operations Engineer role at National Physical Laboratory (NPL). Our world‑leading Time & Frequency department is seeking an experienced Service Operations Engineer.
About the Role
You will be joining our team at an exciting time – we maintain the UK’s National Time Scale, UTC (NPL), and are currently developing the UK's first resilient Time Scale facility that will underpin Digital Infrastructure. This will address the risks associated with our dependency on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (e.g., GPS), which are vulnerable to both natural and intentional interference. As a Service Operations Engineer, you will enjoy a pivotal role in the operation and management of UK Digital Infrastructure that pushes the boundaries of measurement accuracy for the UK’s new resilient Time Scale.
Key Responsibilities
- Report to the Tower Lead and support the development, deployment, and operation of tools and systems within Time and Frequency infrastructure, including planning, deployment, and operation of components.
- Implement systems and processes (e.g., ITSM and ITIL).
- Develop IT management systems and performance indicators.
- Partner with prominent scientists and cybersecurity experts to ensure service readiness.
- Build operation practices and routines, such as monitoring and responding to alerts, alarms, threshold breaches, incidents, and reported problems.
- Report complex technical information in a clear and digestible format.
About You
Essential
- A degree (or equivalent experience) in Telecommunications, IT, or a relevant field.
- Prior experience in delivery and operation of telecoms or IT solutions.
- Familiarity with ITIL practices and IT/telecom standards.
- Delivery of ITSM.
Advantageous
- Experience with open‑source applications (e.g., Zabbix, Netbook, Grafana, ServiceNow).
- Familiarity with JSON, Linux, Kubernetes.
- Professional experience within an R&D environment.
Desirable Interests
- Time and frequency measurement and time scale steering.
- Real‑time monitoring and control of electronic hardware.
- Satellite communication, optical fibre, and GNSS‑based systems.
