Overview

Protective Security Manager role at National Physical Laboratory (NPL). The role is within UKTL and involves delivering security solutions across the physical environment, ensuring the security posture aligns with risk, and maintaining safety, resilience, and reputation of the facility.

Successful candidates will join a state-of-the-art facility and support testing and research on the latest technologies and innovations in the industry. The post holder will be responsible for out of hours incident response and key holder duties and must be located no more than 1 hour from the facility. Successful applicants must be able to commute to the UKTL offices in Birmingham at least twice a week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the UKTL Leadership in maintaining a secure operating environment, ensuring the security posture is commensurate to the risks.
  • Act as the principal point of contact for security matters at the facility.
  • Maintain security awareness and culture across the UKTL workforce, delivering training and briefings as necessary.
  • Provide governance and oversight of physical security standards, ensuring accreditation obligations (e.g., DSIT) are met.
  • Plan, deliver and review internal security assurance audits to identify non-compliance, across physical security, and make practical recommendations.
  • Work in partnership with the UKTL Cyber Security team to ensure a joined-up approach to security risk management.
  • Conduct security investigations, collate and present statistical data to monitor standards and drive improvements.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders including estates, contractors, and relevant government agencies.
  • Develop operational procedures to address gaps in security performance in line with the security strategy.
  • Report non-compliance and provide guidance to achieve compliance.
  • Develop and maintain a knowledge base of known and emerging threats to inform risk management strategies.
  • Maintain out-of-hours incident response readiness and key holder duties.

About You

  • Experience in security functions, particularly designing, implementing, and managing secure facilities. Ability to work as part of a team and manage own workload. Pragmatic, highly organized, detail-focused, and a strong communicator.
