About the Role

NPL is seeking an experienced Higher Scientist based in Teddington to plan and deliver a number of technical activities to take our research to the next level. This full‑time Research Scientist job comes with a generous salary and benefits package.

Responsibilities

  • Sharing learnings so that we all benefit and mentoring those with less experience
  • Developing partnerships to strengthen our capability
  • Acting as an ambassador for our work externally and promoting what we do
  • Providing technical support for any bids we may be undertaking

About You

We set standards and help combat global issues such as climate change, curing diseases and developing cutting‑edge communications technology. You will spot potential commercial opportunities and raise our profile. You will keep technical knowledge up‑to‑speed and complete work to the highest standards, on time and within budget.

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree or post‑graduate research degree in engineering, physics or a science‑related field
  • Interest and some knowledge and experience in at least one area:
  • Rydberg quantum sensing, communications and signal processing
  • Cryogenic 4 K on‑wafer probing, RF and microwave measurements
  • Experience in RF and microwave on‑wafer measurements, preferably under cryogenic conditions
  • Expertise in commissioning, operating and maintaining cryogenic systems such as dilution refrigerators with guidance on RF and microwave measurements
  • Experience on non‑linear RF measurements and RF noise measurements
  • Theoretical and practical understanding of electromagnetics and quantum sciences, expertise in measurement calibration, strong scientific problem‑solving skills, proficiency in report and paper writing, and the ability to generate creative ideas in an R&D environment
  • Work within established Health and Safety and Quality systems to safely produce accurate and repeatable results
  • Good spoken and written communication skills and the ability to collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to plan and deliver against agreed time, cost and quality needs
  • Evidence of the ability to complete work that requires a high level of attention to detail
  • Enjoy problem solving and can demonstrate critical thinking, assessing the pros and cons of your approach
