Duties
- Completes wastewater treatment processes that remove nitrogen, phosphorous, soluble chemicals, oils, and heavy metals such as copper and chrome.
- Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs a variety of equipment such as masticators/grinders, filters, regulators, pumps, valves, chemical feed machines, chlorinators, and aeration equipment (fans, air injection, oxygenation).
- Monitors, regulates, and adjusts fluid discharge levels.
- Performs microbiological tests such as inoculation and incubation of outgoing water samples to verify the elimination of treated microorganisms.
- Measures and introduces chemicals and compounds into the water system.
- Performs operator maintenance on vehicles operated.
- Manually digs ditches for repair and installation of utility lines.
- Sweeps and cleans shop areas and tools in order to maintain a clean and orderly workshop.
- Ensures wastewater quality is in compliance with all Federal, state, and/or local regulations, as well as Departmental and Bureau level policy.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- Valid driver’s license required; submit Motor Vehicle Operator\’s License and Driving Record. Sealed state‑issued driving records required for all states in which the applicant holds licenses.
- Wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards; a uniform allowance will be provided.
- New employee or supervisor in the Federal government required to complete a one‑year probationary period.
- Obtain and maintain a current Wastewater and Water Treatment Operations Certificate Class 4.
- Obtain and maintain a valid U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Health Services Type 1 & 2 Wastewater and Water Treatment Operator Certificate Class 4 within 12 months of start date.
- May be required to travel overnight away from home up to 3 nights per month.
- May be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
- Serve a 1‑year probationary period during which fitness and alignment with public‑interest goals will be evaluated.

Physical Demands
Work assignments typically require moderately heavy physical effort to lift, carry, or otherwise handle items weighing up to 40 pounds. Duties involve maneuvering into and out of specific locations while dismantling and assembling utility‑related equipment. Frequent standing, walking, bending, crouching, reaching, and stooping are typical. Occasionally, climbing and work in high places may be required, as well as the use of hoists, holders, and pulleys when handling large equipment.
Working Conditions
Work is both indoors and outdoors where the incumbent may be subject to prevailing weather conditions. The incumbent may be exposed to biological hazards, hazardous gases (methane, chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide), electrical shock, loud noises, acids, and hydraulic fluids. Safety equipment such as face shields, gloves, hard‑toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing must be used. The incumbent may be required to operate motor vehicles and heavy engineering equipment.
