About the role

We are seeking a practical and proactive Systems Engineer to join our Information Services department and help deliver and support critical IT infrastructure across the British Museum.

This is an excellent opportunity for an infrastructure professional who enjoys hands-on technical work and wants to broaden their experience across server, network, cloud and telephony services.

Working as part of a collaborative technology team, you will help maintain the availability, performance and security of the Museum’s infrastructure, supporting around 1,000 colleagues as well as the systems and services used by millions of visitors.

You will monitor and maintain infrastructure services, respond to incidents and alerts, carry out preventative maintenance and support upgrades and improvements.

You will work closely with more senior infrastructure colleagues, the Service Desk, other Information Services teams and third-party suppliers to resolve issues and provide reliable services.

The role also offers opportunities to contribute to infrastructure projects and the Museum’s continuing move towards hosted cloud services.

If you are a hands-on infrastructure professional who enjoys solving technical problems, working collaboratively and learning new technologies, we would love to hear from you.

About you

We are looking for a technically capable, organised and solutions-focused professional who works well with others and is comfortable taking responsibility for infrastructure support activities.

  • You will bring
  • Practical experience and knowledge of Cisco switching and routing, Active Directory/Azure AD, Windows Server, Azure Paa S/Iaa S services and Power Shell or automation.
  • Experience supporting or delivering infrastructure projects.
  • The ability to diagnose technical issues, respond to alerts and contribute to the effective resolution of incidents and problems.
  • Experience working with third-party suppliers, vendors and technical colleagues.
  • An awareness of infrastructure security, data governance, business continuity and disaster-recovery requirements.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical information clearly.
  • A positive, collaborative attitude and a willingness to embrace change and develop your knowledge with an organised approach.
  • Key areas of responsibility
  • Support the day-to-day operation, maintenance and performance of the Museum’s server, network and telephony infrastructure.
  • Monitor system health, carry out preventative maintenance and help resolve incidents and problems in line with agreed service levels.
  • Install, commission and maintain infrastructure equipment and support planned upgrades and enhancements.
  • Contribute to change control, system architecture and infrastructure projects, including the introduction of new technologies and services.
  • Help ensure infrastructure services meet security, business continuity and disaster-recovery requirements.
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, asset records and service-performance information.
  • Work collaboratively with senior infrastructure colleagues, the Service Desk and third-party suppliers, sharing technical knowledge and guidance where appropriate.
  • Keep up to date with relevant developments and emerging technologies across the IT industry.
