Join to apply for the Volunteer Farmhouse Guide (Weekends) role at National Museums Scotland

Volunteer Farmhouse Guide | Ideally 3-4 hours per weekend

National Museums Scotland is currently looking for Volunteer Farmhouse Guides at our National Museum of Rural Life (near East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire).

We are looking for enthusiastic, creative, honest and friendly individuals to join our Visitor Experience team in making people feel welcome at Wester Kittochside farm.

The Reid family owned and ran the farm for more than 400 years. Now part of the National Museum of Rural Life, the Georgian farmhouse is decorated as it would have been in the 1950s.

Our volunteer guides are on hand for visitors who are curious about the house, the era or the family.

What’s involved?

  • Welcoming people to the farmhouse
  • Answering questions about the building and its former residents
  • Encouraging visitors to respect the house and its contents.

This role may suit you if you

  • Are interested in Scottish rural life or history
  • Enjoy learning about new things
  • Are friendly and approachable
  • Looking for something to fill a few hours over the weekend.

When is it?

Volunteering hours are negotiable. Ideally, we are hoping our successful volunteers would be able to provide us with a morning or afternoon most weeks on an ongoing basis.

By getting involved you could

  • Learn more about National Museums Scotland and our work
  • Develop valuable skills and experiences within the museum sector
  • Enjoy doing something you like whilst meeting new, like-minded people
  • Share your knowledge with visitors.

Volunteer Farmhouse Guides must be 18 years or older.

Please see the Volunteer Role Description for more information prior to applying.

Volunteers are a bridge between us and our community. If you think this is something you would enjoy and can lend some of your time to, we would love to hear from you.
