About the Assistant Registrar role:

Located in the Registrar team, this appointment will play a key role in delivering National Museums Scotland’s loans, acquisitions and disposals programmes in accordance with Museum policy and procedures. As an Assistant Registrar at National Museums Scotland you will:

  • Assist the Registrars with delivery of the Museum’s Loans Programme of short and long term loans (incoming and outgoing) for exhibitions, display and other Museum purposes.
  • Apply professional knowledge and judgement to the viability of loans, acquisitions and disposal projects, liaising with and advising internal and external stakeholders.
  • Arrange insurance/indemnity cover for loans and maintain records of National Museums Scotland’s total indemnity.
  • Negotiate and implement transport and courier arrangements with shipping agents and borrowing/lending venues.
  • Assist with management of the delivery, installation and de-installation programme for incoming loans for exhibitions and displays in liaison with the Exhibitions and Design department.

Skills and experience we’re looking for in our Assistant Registrar:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including being proficient in using databases and Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, with effective time management skills.
  • Strong logistical and project management skills to assist with the management of transport and courier arrangements.
  • Experience of delivering collection registration services (such as loans, acquisitions or disposals) in a museum or similar environment.
  • Experience of using Museum Collections Information Systems, such as Axiell Collections, Mimsy, TMS.
  • Experience of arranging UK Government Indemnity or other collections insurance.
