JOB DESCRIPTION

REPORTS TO: Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER

  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
  • Teaching, according to their educational needs, the pupils assigned to him/her, including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the pupils in school and elsewhere;
  • Assessing, recording and reporting on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.

KEY TASKS:

  • To teach Religious Studies up to A Level standard using varied and innovative teaching strategies.
  • To aid the HoD in drawing up suitable teaching programmes (schemes of work) in line with the requirements of the appropriate statutory bodies.
  • To be aware of and implement as necessary, developments in Religious Studies teaching that will further pupil progress.
  • To maximise pupils’ involvement in the production of attractive and useful wall and other displays.
  • To implement all departmental policies.
  • As directed by the Principal, to teach an additional subject which best meets the curricular needs of the School.
  • To promote that aspect of the School’s ethos relating to cross community work and furthering the School’s Equality, Inclusion and Diversity programme.
  • To teach Citizenship, Employability and Personal Development as requested by the Principal.
  • To undertake organisation and participation in the department’s visits and educational trips.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland by the date of taking up duty.
  • Hold an Honours Degree (2:2 or above), or equivalent qualification, of which a major/significant component is Religious Studies or a related subject.
  • Be qualified to teach Religious Studies to GCSE and A-Level in a post-primary school.
  • Demonstrable experience of teaching Religious Studies to achieve positive learning outcomes.
  • Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • Hold an Honours Degree (minimum 2:1 or above), or equivalent qualification, which has a high academic content in the curricular areas most taught in Religious Studies.
  • Experience of teaching Religious Studies to A-Level for a minimum of one year.
  • Have qualifications, training and/or experience to offer an additional subject, which at the time of appointment, best meets the curricular needs of the school.
  • Have qualifications, training and/or experience to assist with Grosvenor Grammar School extra-curricular provision.

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people or in specified places as ‘regulated activity’. In the event that you are recommended for appointed to a post that involves ‘regulated activity’, the Education Authority will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background.
