JOB DESCRIPTION

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY AND PRIMARY OBJECTIVES

  • To lead the development and evaluation of special and additional educational needs in Ravenscroft Nursery School and to oversee the day-to-day operation of the school’s SEN and Inclusion policy.
  • To raise standards of achievement of children with special and additional educational needs.
  • Deliver a programme of age and developmentally appropriate SEN support to identified pupils, and co-ordinate a whole-school, inclusive environment approach in collaboration with the school staff.
  • To increase staff confidence and competence in teaching and monitoring children with special and additional educational needs.
  • Ensure that the graduated response as laid out in the schools SEN provision map is implemented appropriately for children on all stages of COP.
  • In collaboration with all staff ensure and contribute to the holistic development of all pupils with special and additional educational needs.
  • Draw up and maintain an SEN register for the school.

Leadership & Management

  • Contribute to the overall strategic direction and delivery of the school’s aims and objectives by providing advice, insight and experience that will be beneficial to the activity and development of Ravenscroft Nursery School in the area of special and additional educational needs.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of special and additional educational needs provision through an evaluative provision map management cycle.
  • Track children’s progress and set targets for raising achievement.
  • Ensure up to date and accurate records are kept of all interventions/involvement for individual children.
  • Supervise and manage the team of Learning support staff within the school in all areas of their work relating to the provision they provide for children in the classroom.
  • Keep up to date with knowledge of national and local initiatives and how they may impact upon policy and practice.
  • Liaise with a range of external agencies for pupils’ provision.

Teaching & Learning

  • In collaboration with the school’s Principal and staff team, monitor learning and teaching to ensure the needs of children with special and additional educational needs are met.
  • Deliver training on a range of areas for parents/carers of children with additional and special educational needs.
  • Meet regularly throughout the academic year with parents of pupils who have a statement of educational need (in addition to the Annual Reviews), to monitor their progress.

Continuing Professional Development - Personal

  • In conjunction with the Principal, take responsibility for personal professional development, keeping up to date with research and developments in teaching pedagogy for special and additional educational needs provision.

Assessment & Recording

  • The post holder will take overall responsibility for the production of all Personal Learning Plans, through collaboration with all school staff with regard to strategies and success criteria used.
  • Use assessment and recording tools which aim to gather additional and specific information to inform support strategies for children on the SEN register.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA

  • Hold a teaching qualification which meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland.
  • Minimum of 1 years’ demonstrable experience of teaching in a Principal-led Nursery School or Teacher-led Nursery Unit attached to a Primary School or international equivalent.
  • Demonstrable experience of using a range of effective classroom strategies to provide support and challenge children and young people of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs.

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • Minimum of 3 years’ demonstrable experience of teaching in a Principal-led Nursery School or Teacher-led Nursery Unit environment.
  • Demonstrable experience of teaching or supporting pupils for whom English is not their first language.

The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people or in specified places as ‘regulated activity’.
