The Head of Physics will initially work alongside the previous Head of Department who is relinquishing the role to devote more time to her role as Senior Leader. Heads of subjects provide professional leadership and management of their subject area to secure high quality teaching, effective use of resources and ongoing development of learning and achievement for all pupils. As part of the school’s middle management, they play a key role in the school’s strategic planning.

Key areas of responsibility include:

  • Strategic Direction and Development of the Subject
    • Support efficient and effective teaching and learning as a whole school strategy to contribute to whole school improvement.
    • Contribute to the self-evaluative school model including completing a departmental self-evaluation on a yearly basis as required by the Principal.
    • Devise, monitor and evaluate appropriate action plans to support the School Development Plan.
    • Analyse internal and external examination results, identify areas for development and report these annually to the Principal and Vice Principal.
    • Establish agreed, appropriate targets for pupils and staff.
    • Keep the Departmental Handbook under review and ensure that an up-to-date copy is available for all staff.
    • Communicate and cooperate with other departments, including sharing good practice.
    • Establish departmental policies in line with School Policies.
    • Monitor and review the appropriateness of the curriculum for each pupil.
    • Ensure that a range of courses suited to the needs of the pupils is offered.
  • Teaching and Learning
    • Lead colleagues in the process of regular evaluation of the work of the department.
    • Monitor teaching standards and methods within the department.
    • Ensure appropriate teaching and learning strategies are employed at all levels.
    • Ensure subject-specific support is available for any pupils requiring additional assistance.
    • Develop and integrate the use of Information and Communications Technology within the teaching of the subject.
    • Set standards and act as a role model for pupils and other staff.
    • Ensure assessment of pupils’ work is undertaken regularly.
  • Leading and Managing Staff
    • Promote the professional development of staff within the department.
    • Support Initial Teacher Training and Early Professional Development Stage teachers.
    • Encourage innovative and imaginative curriculum work within the department.
    • Observe members of the department at work in the classroom and provide feedback.
  • Efficient and Effective Deployment of Staff and Resources
    • Advise the Principal on human resource needs in the department.
    • Conduct an audit of resource needs and present to the Principal/Vice Principal.
    • Ensure that rooms, furniture, equipment, and displays are maintained to a high standard.
    • Develop/implement a department Health and Safety policy consistent with the school policy.

Essential criteria include holding a teaching qualification recognised in Northern Ireland, a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification in Physics, and a minimum of 5 years’ experience teaching Physics to GCSE level and 3 years to A level. Knowledge of the GCSE and A Level Physics syllabi, Northern Ireland Curriculum, and current assessment methods is also required.

Desirable criteria may include experience managing people or coordinating an area of the curriculum and willingness to contribute to the extra-curricular life of the school.
