National Highways have an excellent opportunity for two Senior Environmental Advisors to join our Environmental Sustainability Division within the Safety, Engineering and Standards (SES) directorate. As a Senior Environmental Advisor, you will act as a source of environmental expertise leading on the delivery of better environmental outcomes across the business. Working at a national level, you will primarily provide specialist environmental advice to Major Projects and Operations Directorates to support delivery of an ambitious programme of National Highways’ asset maintenance and development.

You will be responsible for providing advice across a broad range of environmental areas including: environmental impact assessment (all topics), appraisal, design, mitigation and supporting projects through the planning process. There is also an opportunity to play a key role in developing and implementing an Environmental Management Framework at National Highways. Therefore, we would also encourage applications from those with experience of Environmental Management Systems and ISO14001.

Please note this is a hybrid position and can be based from any of our UK offices; however, travel to Birmingham to attend team meetings may be required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide accurate, practical and timely specialist advice (including reviews and technical assurance) to National Highways, with a particular focus on supporting delivery of our Major Project’s programme of works.
  • Act as a source of subject matter expertise to provide advice and guidance to National Highways’ contractors and suppliers, with a focus on assuring that environmental work is fit for purpose and fulfills Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) requirements.
  • Work collaboratively across National Highways to develop and implement a business-wide Environmental Management Framework, including drafting new standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Exercise freedom to make day-to-day tactical decisions with supervision from the Principal Environmental Advisor & Team Leader, recognizing major issues and escalating accordingly.
About you:
  • Relevant qualifications and/or evidence of professional development.
  • Specialist knowledge and experience of environmental impact assessment, appraisal and/or environmental management and/or Environmental Management Systems / ISO14001.
  • Ability to use a combination of general and specialist environmental knowledge to optimize the solutions to complex environmental issues involving significant levels of risk.
  • Evidence of managing internal and external stakeholder relationships to achieve desired outcomes.
