Consultant Obstetrician with special interest in Fetal Medicine in Worcester

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking to recruit a Consultant Obstetrician. Successful candidates will join a team of 25 substantive consultants. The post will have a special interest in Fetal Medicine. The Directorate provides services across 3 hospital sites within the county of Worcestershire. The candidate will benefit from working within a friendly and experienced team of Consultants.

As a Trust, we have been actively involved in developing the training program for students from the Three Counties Medical School based in Worcester which opened in September 2023. We also have a long-established role in training medical students from the University of Birmingham and undergraduates from the University of Warwick.

As part of the Consultant Advisory Appointment Committee, shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide a 5-minute presentation on the topic: At Worcester we are keen to increase and optimise our fetal medicine capacity. Main duties of the job

This is a full-time Consultant appointment in Obstetrics, with a specialist interest in fetal medicine. The post holder will work collaboratively with Consultant colleagues across the Trust and will undertake clinical sessions at Worcestershire Royal Hospital, the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch, and the Kidderminster Treatment Centre. General outpatient clinics will be delivered across all main sites and selected community hospitals.

The successful applicant will be asked to work as the fetal medicine and Obstetric Governance lead and develop the local service in line with both local, regional and National requirements. They will work closely alongside the Governance team, and other members of the MDT, to ensure quality assurance standards are being met, guidelines are up to date, national audits are completed and they have oversight of complaints, incidents and any actions that are identified.

The successful applicant will participate in regular clinical meetings, post-graduate activities and maintain continuing medical education, in accordance with the requirements of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and General Medical Council. The post-holder will ensure their own practice is up to date and they support the principles of revalidation by the GMC. They will also be expected to support less experienced junior colleagues in the development of their skills both within an elective and emergency setting.

Job responsibilities

This job description, together with the job plan, will be reviewed annually and agreed with the Clinical Director and Divisional Director, on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer, to ensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibility of the post and purchaser requirements.

A suitably experienced post-holder will be expected to provide a clinical service in the relevant specialty to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust and to General Practitioners. The post-holder will be expected to provide a service to patients of the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, General Practitioners and to attend multi-disciplinary meetings. The successful candidate will be expected to work within multi-disciplinary teams in providing high quality clinical care. It is anticipated work will be undertaken on three sites and closer to the patients' home. The Trust is seeking to extend services to GP surgeries/health centres etc and job plans may be revised in due course.

The post-holder will provide support to the A&E department and acute medicine to ensure timely appropriate care and patient flow through the hospital. The post-holder will provide consultation and advisory service to clinical colleagues in the Trust and Primary Care.

Person Specification

Experience

• Essential: Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCT in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.
• Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems both emergency and elective Obstetrics.
• Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients both within Obstetrics and Fetal Medicine.
• Ability to undertake independent fetal medicine ultrasound lists.
• Ability to provide expert advice and clinical support to junior and consultant colleagues in Obstetrics.
• Ability to contribute to Obstetric on-call rota including acute Obstetrics care.
• Desirable: Experience at working in Obstetrics at consultant level.

Management and Administrative Experience

• Essential: Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively.
• Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service.
• Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities.
• Ability to manage and lead the specialty firm and multi-disciplinary team.

Qualifications

• Entry on Specialist Register in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (or expected within 6 months of interview date) via; CCT or Portfolio Pathway (was CESR) or European Community Rights.
• Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent.
• ATSM/SITM or equivalent in Advanced Labour Ward and Fetal Medicine or pre-natal diagnosis.
• Desirable: Higher degree.
• Subspeciality training in Maternal and Fetal medicine.
