Overview
As an Emergency Medicine Consultant, you provide senior clinical input in complex ED cases, sign off RCEM-designated conditions, and lead patient disposition planning to optimise flow. You collaborate with management to address capacity and risk, and act as a clinical lead during exit blocks while pursuing hospital-wide solutions. You participate in on-call duties and commit to ongoing professional development and personal/job planning with the Clinical Director. This role supports cross-area work within the Trust’s Emergency Care Centre and Resuscitation services.
Responsibilities
- Maintain highest clinical standards in emergency medicine
- Lead resuscitation teams and safely transfer critically ill patients
- Provide safe/effective care for critically ill patients across all ages with specialist guidance
- Address safeguarding concerns through initial management and escalation
- Lead on-call responsibilities and support cross-site collaboration
- Contribute to capacity management and patient flow initiatives during exit blocks
- Adhere to annual appraisal, job planning, and performance reviews
- Engage in personal development planning and continuous professional development
Key requirements
- Full GMC registration
- Fellow of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine
- Training & experience equivalent to UK CCT or in interview stage
- ATLS/ETC, APLS, ALS Provider; Ultrasound trained
- Broad UK Emergency Medicine experience including paediatric EM
- Experience in teaching (postgraduate and undergraduate) and clinical audit/research
- Ability to work under pressure and lead a multidisciplinary team
- Excellent communication and mentorship abilities
- Leadership in multidisciplinary teams
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Ability to manage conflicting and unpredictable demands
- Ultrasound training
- Basic information technology competence
- Understanding of Clinical Governance and research methods
