An opportunity has arisen for a suitably qualified and experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our busy Specialist Chemistry Department at BCPS. The ideal candidate will be an experienced Biomedical Scientist (AfC band 6) with a minimum of 3 years' experience as a HCPC registered BMS and hold the specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent. Suitable candidates would have expertise in a range of analytical skills and troubleshooting experience, for example, HPLC, GCMS, ICP-MS, LCMS/MS and Eliza.
Consideration will be given to candidates suitable for a Trainee Biomedical Scientist position. All potential candidates must have a BSc Biomedical Science degree or equivalent, have a formal letter from the IBMS confirming status of the degree and detailing training requirements together with a minimum of 6 months clinical laboratory experience.
Whilst initially based on either the Sandwell or City Health Campus sites, this role will require working across both sites. Candidates should ensure they meet the requirements of the person specification and that their application demonstrates how this is achieved. Key skills include good analytical and organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure.
Main duties of the job include:
- As a State Registered Biomedical Scientist, to carry out analysis and technical investigations of clinical samples in one of the specialist disciplines of Pathology.
- To undertake manual, semi-automated and fully automated analysis of all specimens.
- To interpret and validate analytical results, ensuring accuracy and precision.
- To provide approved departmental information and advice to other healthcare professionals, patients and the public and to refer on to appropriate specialists requests for information outside their area of responsibility.
- To carry out diagnostic analytical work in all sections of the specialist laboratory and to advise senior staff of performance or procedures affecting quality control.
- To adhere at all times to the department's Standard Operating Procedures for carrying out analyses and to make recommendations for changes.
- To develop and maintain skills and knowledge appropriate to the BMS1 grade in order to benefit patient outcomes and treatment.
- To undertake routine maintenance of highly complex analytical equipment as specified in SOPs and to report any faults to a supervisor immediately.
- To maintain laboratory supplies and adhere to written procedures for stock management.
- To undertake general laboratory housekeeping as specified in SOPs.
For short periods of time, the post holder may be required to deputise for the section supervisor.

Person Specification:
- Qualifications: Essential: BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent, GCSE English grade C or equivalent, GCSE Maths grade C or equivalent. Desirable: IBMS approved BSc in Biomedical Science, State Registered with Health Care Professions Council, A level in a Science subject.
