The Directorate of Critical Care spans three units located at St Mary's, Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospitals. We are tertiary referral centres for multiple specialities including major trauma, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, oncology, hepatobiliary, renal and vascular surgery.

Within the Directorate, we have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and experienced critical care nurse to join our dynamic and friendly Clinical Education team for a 6 months secondment. The successful applicant will be based at St Mary's Hospital AICU, but will be expected to participate in educational activities at all sites. The post holder should be a registered nurse with a post registration qualification in Critical Care, educated to postgraduate diploma/degree level and hold a recognised teaching/assessing qualification (such as a mentorship qualification or above). The post holder will act as a clinical expert within their sphere of work, provide clinical coaching and support to staff and assist in the provision of education and training. The aim of the role is to ensure the delivery of high quality, safe and effective care contributing to improving outcomes and experiences for patients, families and carers.

Main duties of the job

  • To maintain an effective educational environment through coaching and staff development, whilst working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team at large.
  • Enabling and ensuring delivery of high quality, safe and effective care, thus improving the patients' experience.
  • Act as an expert practitioner, resource and role model to encourage evidence based practice and provide support and supervision to all staff, including those on professional development courses.
  • To be responsible for the development of education and training programmes adapting it as necessary and achieving education and training targets.
  • To collaborate in the strategic development of the service.
  • The post holder will contribute to ensuring a conducive work environment and he/she will be a change agent with a strong professional and clinical focus.

Person Specification

  • Education/Qualifications
    • Essential: Registered Nurse (level 1), Post registration qualification in specialty, Recognised teaching/assessing qualification (e.g. MIP), Educated to postgraduate diploma/degree level.
    • Desirable: Post graduate teaching qualification.
  • Experience
    • Essential: Significant Critical Care experience, Led change in practice, Delivering education and training both classroom based and within clinical settings, Effective working with Multidisciplinary Team.
    • Desirable: Policy writing.
  • Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
    • Essential: Organisation and management skills, Negotiating skills, Excellent communication skills, IT Skills (Including proficiency with Microsoft Office Packages and accurate, fast typing skills).
    • Desirable: Management experience.
