Overview
In this senior role, you lead a comprehensive Chemical Pathology service across the Trust, providing expert clinical advice and governance leadership. You act as Deputy Head of Department and shape service development, quality improvement, research, and education, collaborating with clinicians and partners. You will contribute to 24-hour clinical advisory cover and drive initiatives in quality, POC testing, and laboratory innovation. This position offers strategic influence in a modern, digitally-enabled pathology service with a focus on patient care.

Responsibilities
- Provide expert clinical and scientific advice for complex biochemical investigations to support diagnosis, treatment and monitoring
- Lead the Chemical Pathology Quality Management System (IQC, EQA, audit, incident investigation, CAPA, UKAS compliance)
- Act as senior adviser on quality and governance
- Deputy Head of Department: support operational/strategic planning, workforce development, recruitment, appraisal and financial management
- Lead Point of Care Testing activity and support Blood Sciences developments
- Contribute to research and development, service improvement, teaching and professional education
- Engage with clinicians, Pathology colleagues, HSL and external stakeholders
- Participate in 24-hour clinical advisory cover across Trust sites
- Contribute to budget planning, procurement and business cases
- Work across Trust sites including Croxley Green Park Laboratory
Key requirements
- Minimum 5 years post-qualification as a Registered Clinical Scientist, with at least 2 years at advanced practitioner level
- Expertise in at least one specialised analytical or clinical area relevant to Chemical Pathology
- Track record in research, development and audit (national/international presentations and peer-reviewed publications)
- CPD at an appropriate level; Registration as a clinical scientist with Health Professions Council
- Thorough knowledge of biochemistry, analytical methods, QA, clinical governance and NHS guidelines
- Ability to lead service development, strategic planning and quality improvement
- Strong communication, teaching, mentoring and leadership skills
- UK professional registration current (UK Registration)
- Willingness to work across multiple sites and contribute to 24-hour cover
