Overview

As a Consultant Psychiatrist on Austen Ward, you will lead inpatient care for a male general adult unit and supervise junior doctors. You will drive high-quality assessment, treatment, risk management and multidisciplinary reviews within a progressive Trust focused on recovery and compassionate care. The role offers influence on service development and clinical practice, with opportunities to shape patient outcomes and staff education. Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all patients on Austen ward
  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments and inpatient treatment
  • Support staff in managing psychiatric emergencies
  • Lead ward reviews, CPA reviews and multi-professional meetings
  • Act as Responsible Clinician under MHA and provide evidence for tribunals/hospital hearings
  • Perform risk assessments and participate in H-RAMM and MAPPA
  • Provide medical leadership to the team
  • Liaise with carers and other services
  • Provide clinical/educational supervision to junior colleagues
  • Contribute to clinical governance and service development
  • Engage in teaching and training commitments
  • Participate in undergraduate and postgraduate education

Key requirements

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Fully registered with the GMC with licence to practise
  • GMC Specialist Register or eligible within six months
  • Approved clinician status or able to obtain within 3 months
  • Section 12(2) MHA eligibility or able to obtain within 3 months
  • Driving license or proposed alternative
  • Excellent clinical knowledge and communication skills
  • Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA AAC
