We are looking for an enthusiastic Gastroenterologist to Co-Lead our upper GI Cancer service as part of an exciting expansion of our service this year. This post is made up of 7.625 Direct Clinical Activities and 2.375 Supporting Professional Activities. The post-holder will be on call for acute gastrointestinal bleeding rota currently covering both THH and Harefield Hospital on a 1 week in 7-8 basis. This attracts 1 PA, within the DCC allocation. The intention would be to remove the Harefield commitment from the department in the future, with a consequent 0.5PA reduction. There is an availability uplift for on-call from THHFT (currently 5%). There is no General Medical on call commitment for this post. Applicants must hold a CCT in Gastroenterology and GIM or be within 6 months of CCT to be eligible to apply for the post.
The successful candidate will join the six existing consultants, Dr Grover (Hepatology and Gastroenterology, Departmental Clinical Lead), Dr Lean (Upper GI cancer Lead), Dr Postgate (ERCP and Interventional Endoscopy), Dr Rameshshanker (complex Interventional Endoscopy, ERCP and Endoscopy Lead), Dr Arun Rajendran (Endoscopy Training Lead) and Dr Sid Oke (Nutrition Lead), IBD Lead post - Locum in situ - post advertised. The department works closely as a cohesive clinical team with complimentary interests. We are looking for an individual who will work well with our team in our fantastic unit and would be delighted to speak to any interested candidates.
Main duties of the job include:
- Providing an effective and comprehensive service for our patients and supporting continuing service developments.
- Participating in the on-call GI bleed/ Gastroenterology rota on an approximately 1:8 basis with full recruitment.
- Co-leading the upper GI Cancer service, including vetting of referrals and review of patients in clinics (face to face, telephone and paper/ virtually).
- Participating in the bleeding rota; providing emergency out-of-hours Gastroenterology cover to both Harefield Hospital and Hillingdon Hospital.
- Running an inpatient and outpatient service for gastroenterology including an advisory service for colleagues.
- Participating in the training and professional development of medical and other professional staff.
- Continuing personal professional development (CPD) and revalidation in line with guidance from relevant professional bodies.
- Helping the department meet its objective of JAG accreditation.
- Working with other Gastroenterology Consultants to ensure the Trust meets various national waiting time targets.
- Providing clear evidence of SPA activities, including clinical and educational supervision, audit and personal CPD.
- Encouraging the development of areas of expertise of special interest in Gastroenterology.
- Participating in the medical advisory and liaison work of the hospital Consultant Staff Committee.
- Collaborating with the Lead Clinician and the Senior Nurse Management Team in the development and implementation of all relevant policies for the running of the department.
- Assisting in the recruitment and appointment of junior medical staff.
Essential qualifications include:
- Full GMC Registration with License to Practice
- MRCP or equivalent
- CCT (or within 6 months of CCT) or on the Specialist Register, accredited in both General Medicine and Gastroenterology.
- Broad experience in General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.
- Experience and competence in diagnostic & therapeutic upper (including GI bleeds) and lower GI endoscopy.
Desirable qualifications include:
- Higher degree e.g. MD, PhD
- Experience in management of Upper GI Cancer patients.
