In this role you join the microbiology department to broaden and improve microbiology, virology and IPC services across the Trust. You will work with consultants to lead infection management, drive service transformation and foster collaboration with partners. The post includes teaching, research or CPD opportunities and potential sub-specialty development aligned with the Trust’s strategic direction. You will operate within a cross-functional, patient-focused environment and participate in an out-of-hours rota.
Responsibilities
- Lead infection management within the Trust/hospital and contribute to a comprehensive infection service.
- Provide direct clinical care and proactive liaison with consultants, GUM physicians, respiratory specialists for TB, and IPC teams.
- Commit to departmental units (ICU, Haematology/Oncology, medical/surgical wards) and IPC activities.
- Attend and contribute to committees (IPC, Medicines Management, Antibiotic Working Group, Sepsis, Pathology Directorate, Microbiology Management).
- Engage in MDTs (Orthopaedic, Diabetic/High Risk Foot, Cardiology, antibiotic rounds).
- Develop sub-specialty interests aligned with Division needs and Trust strategy.
- Contribute to teaching, examinations and education activities for undergraduates/postgraduates.
- Provide cover for colleagues on leave as per Trust policy; participate in CMEs and clinical audits.
- During emergencies, perform suitable duties and participate in out-of-hours consultant rota.
- Seek collaboration with OUH and pursue academic research and CPD opportunities.
Key requirements
- Full and specialist GMC registration (or eligible for registration within six months).
- Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or within six months of award (UK trained).
- Evidence of UK equivalence to CCT for non-UK trained.
- FRCPath (UK) or equivalent qualification.
- Desirable: MRCP (UK) or equivalent; higher qualification; IPC qualification.
- Essential: thorough training and experience in Medical Microbiology; knowledge of evidence-based practice; IPC experience; infection prevention and control knowledge.
- Desirable: specialist interest complementary to other Consultants; experience in antimicrobial prescribing rationalisation; OPAT interest.
