Overview
As a Consultant Neonatologist, you join an expanding neonatal team at Sunderland Royal Hospital to lead high-quality care for babies with intensive needs.
You will work within a supportive, multidisciplinary department that serves a large birth population and aims for excellence aligned with NNAP standards.
Your role focuses on coordinating service delivery, improving outcomes, and mentoring junior staff.

Responsibilities
- Coordinate and deliver operational aspects of the neonatal service
- lead and support a multi-tier team including middle grade clinicians and ANNPs
- contribute to quality improvement and service development
- deliver excellence in neonatal care and family-centered care
- participate in flexible and sustainable staffing and workload planning
- adhere to NHS governance and resource management
- participate in teaching and supervision of medical, nursing and allied health staff
- engage in audit, research and clinical governance activities
- Key requirements
- Primary medical qualification
- Full GMC registration
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility within six months (with Executive Medical Director approval)
- Subspecialty training in neonatal medicine or RCPCH Neonatal SPIN module or equivalent
- NLS provider
- Desirable: NLS instructor, special interests in cardiology, education or neurodevelopment
- Experience aligned to SPIN module and subspecialist framework
- Strong leadership, coordination, and time-management abilities
- Experience supervising medical, nursing and AHP colleagues
- Experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
- Ability to apply research to clinical practice
