Overview
In this fixed-term role you join the liaison psychiatry team at Kingston Hospital to assess and treat patients referred from non-psychiatric services. You will supervise psychiatric care, deliver brief psychological interventions, and manage mental health presentations in medical settings, including A&E and hospital wards. The role supports a large teaching hospital, emphasizing collaborative, multidisciplinary care. You will contribute to teaching and supervision while aligning with the Trust’s mission to provide high-quality mental health services.
Responsibilities
- Participate fully in the multi-disciplinary team
- Assess and advise on physical and mental health of patients referred by hospital teams
- Prescribe for patients as needed
- Manage patients under supervision
- Assess detention under Mental Health Act when necessary
- Liaise with other specialties and agencies
- Document clinical contacts in RiO system promptly
- Participate in mandatory training
- Teach medical students visiting the unit
- Opportunities for teaching at the medical school (lecturing, examining, tutoring)
- Internal cover for leave within the team
- No on-call commitment for this post
- Administrative support provided by team administrator
Key requirements
- Primary Medical degree
- Full GMC registration
- At least 4 years postgraduate medical experience (≥2 years in psychiatry)
- Eligible for S12 approval (within 6 months)
- Desirable: MRCPsych or equivalent
- Desirable: Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act
- Current UK registration (NHS Careers reference)
- UK-based professional registration and eligibility for sponsorship considerations
