MSK Clinical Specialist in Shanklin

To undertake specialist assessment, interpret the relevant clinical findings of complex patients with musculoskeletal pain or those who have not responded to primary care interventions. To make decisions, using investigative, clinical reasoning and analytical skills regarding the appropriate medical investigation of choice and implementation of such including injections. To ensure a high standard of clinical care for the patients under your management, and support and facilitate more junior staff to do likewise, using evidence-based practices and evaluate outcomes. Keep up to date with clinical developments, current research and implementing changes in clinical practice. To develop the service in line with NHS developments and targets and produce policies in line with these. To represent the Trust externally (locally, regionally, and nationally) regarding MSK services provided to patients with complex MSK pain.

The Musculoskeletal Service provides MSK assessment and treatment for patients presenting with an MSK presentation. Within the MSK Service there is a First Contact Physiotherapy Service provided for local Primary Care Networks. The service operates from key hub sites and other community settings. The Specialist MSK Service manages those patients that require diagnostics or onward referral. Within the MSK Service there is also Adolescent MSK, Pelvic Health and Hydrotherapy. The MSK Service has close links with Persistent Pain Service, Chronic Fatigue and Podiatry.

Main duties of the job include:

• To be professional and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care.
• Provide timely advice over the management of all patients entering the care pathway.
• To advise GPs, patients, families, employers, and Allied Health Professionals on best management.
• To be responsible for the setting and monitoring of standards and policies of clinical practice physiotherapy service referring patients to the specialist pathways.
• To keep accurate records of patient care in line with Trust and service guidelines, being responsible for all MSK records held by the Specialist service, using audit tools when appropriate.
• Work effectively with those patients whose first language is not English and take into consideration diversity issues in particular differing cultural awareness.
• To demonstrate physical ability to carry out Specialist assessment and interventions, including highly developed manual techniques and therapeutic handling.
• To ensure as clinical specialist that designated staff implement policy and service development changes.
• To prescribe as an independent prescriber within areas of clinical competence and with regards to patients' multi-disciplinary treatment and in-line with the relevant professional body and Trust prescribing policies.

Qualifications required include:

• Current registration with Health and Care Professions Council or other professional governing body (e.g. General Chiropractic Council).
• Degree in an Allied Health Profession or equivalent degree/diploma (e.g. MChiro).
• Evidence of post-graduate courses/CPD.
• Willing to undertake injection therapy diploma if not already having competency (for non-spinal roles).
• Evidence of related MSc modules.

Experience required includes:

• Significant relevant post-graduate MSK experience with experience at senior level.
• Evidence of continuing professional development portfolio.
• Previous NHS Experience.
• Experience of audit and service development.
• Experience of working closely with other health professionals.
