Specialty Doctor - General Surgery in Reading

Working alongside experienced Consultants, Surgical Care Practitioners and trainee doctors, you will play a key role in providing high-quality care across a range of surgical specialties. Your responsibilities will include inpatient and day-case operating, outpatient clinics, emergency surgical care and participation in the on-call rota.

• Deliver comprehensive care for elective and emergency general surgical patients, ensuring high standards of safe, effective and patient-centred care.
• Assess, diagnose and manage patients presenting with acute surgical conditions, including participation in emergency admissions, trauma management and on-call services.
• Participate in consultant-led ward rounds, providing ongoing clinical management and coordinating patient care throughout the surgical pathway.
• Undertake outpatient clinics, theatre sessions and endoscopy lists, contributing to the timely assessment and treatment of patients.
• Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective communication, continuity of care and optimal patient outcomes.
• Participate in the full-shift on-call rota, supporting the provision of 24-hour emergency surgical services.
• Supervise, teach and support junior doctors, medical students and allied health professionals, contributing to education and workforce development.
• Engage actively in clinical audit, governance, quality improvement and service development initiatives, promoting continuous improvement and maintaining high standards of clinical practice.

• Qualifications: MBBS or Equivalent, MRCS/FRCS (or equivalent)
• Knowledge & Experience: Minimum of 4 years experience as Foundation Doctor, Core trainee, Registrar or equivalent. Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems, both emergency and elective within General Surgery. Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team. Skills in emergency surgery. The full range of skills necessary to participate in the on-call rota for General Surgery.
• Teaching and Research: Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff. Knowledge of the principles of research/audit and ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
