Overview
In this role you oversee the Operational Engineering department at Royal Preston Hospital, ensuring safe, compliant electrical and mechanical services across a complex estate. You will lead specialist engineering teams and external contractors, balancing day-to-day operations with strategic project delivery. You’ll work within a fast-paced healthcare environment, collaborating with senior stakeholders to maintain service continuity and drive improvements. Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the operational engineering department delivering Electrical/Mechanical/Decontamination services across the Trust estate
- Ensure compliance with NHS HTMs, HBNs, British Standards, and Building Regulations
- Act as Authorised Person for specialist systems (Med Gas, Electrical LV, Water/Legionella, Ventilation, Lifts)
- Plan and manage service interruptions with risk assessments and permit-to-work systems
- Prepare reports for the Trust Board and senior managers; develop contingency plans for emergencies
- Oversee design of new work, upgrades and modifications; manage tenders and budget control
- Project manage maintenance schemes; raise orders and secure resources/materials
- Monitor and control budgets; ensure financial procedures and approvals are followed
- Maintain planned preventative maintenance programmes and asset register; track time and labour
- Lead and motivate directly employed and contracted engineering teams to deliver a responsive service
- Ensure effective labour management, procurement processes, and audit recommendations
- Provide internal and external stakeholder coordination during on-call and after-hours work
Key requirements
- Degree in Engineering or equivalent healthcare engineering experience
- Fully conversant with statutory requirements and NHS Estates guidance
- Significant experience managing complex engineering building services
- Desirable: AP Ventilation/Decontamination
- Ability to operate across multiple sites and lead cross-functional teams
- Experience with budget and procurement processes
