Overview
As Principal Orthotist for the South Coast, you will lead Portsmouth’s orthotic service while maintaining a clinical caseload. You’ll line-manage a small team and oversee the local workshop, developing services in partnership with NHS colleagues. The role blends hands-on clinical work with operational leadership to ensure safe, patient-centred care and continuous improvement. Steeper offers development support as you grow into a broader leadership position within a 100-year-old specialist provider.
Responsibilities
- Develop pathways, processes and procedures to enhance service quality
- Use current evidence-based information to deliver cost-effective clinical care
- Lead MDT-driven innovation and improvement efforts in the local setting
- Evaluate cost-effectiveness, safety and quality of devices and services
- Organise clinics to maximise clinician productivity and progression planning
- Monitor and improve KPIs related to clinician performance and outcomes
- Lead audits and research within the area of responsibility
- Coordinate training for NHS and Steeper staff
- Manage administrative duties (sickness, leave) within area of responsibility
- Facilitate use of Steeper products and preferred suppliers
- Act as the link between Steeper and the local service to address operational issues
- Undertake clinical duties with reduced clinics to enable management time
- Support service modernisation, new ways of working and quality outcomes
- Support innovation, pilots and new service developments in prosthetics/orthotics
Key requirements
- Experienced Orthotist with commitment to high standards of patient care
- Ability to work autonomously and communicate effectively with NHS partners and multidisciplinary teams
- Strong clinical judgement and integrity; interest in developing people and services
- Commercial awareness; balancing clinical quality with operational needs
- Formal management experience not essential but potential to grow into leadership
- Current UK professional registration
