Consultants in Anaesthesia at Poole and Bournemouth Hospitals are reconfiguring services to improve access to specialist and consultant care for emergency pathways and ensure high quality, high volume patient-centred elective care. This is part of a wider Dorset vision to transform our hospitals, community services and primary care to meet the needs of local people and deliver better outcomes for patients.

This is an exciting opportunity for applicants to play a key role in developing services. These posts are the result of a demand/capacity gap analysis. The posts are full-time 10PA contracts (which include 1.5SPA, with additional SPA for defined roles, and the opportunity to take an optional additional PA) and include contribution to the out of hours consultant on call rota. We are developing our elective capacity at weekends, and the post holder may have elective weekend activity in their job plan.

We are building new state of the art theatres at Poole in the near future. Bournemouth will become the major emergency hospital with major surgery, critical care, obstetrics, trauma and paediatrics, while Poole will be the planned care site with a high volume of elective surgery. There will be significant capital investment in this project with additional new build theatres at Poole. The Bournemouth site will have a new build large critical care, emergency department and maternity unit.

About us:

Dorset Clinical Services Review NHS services across Dorset are undergoing reconfiguration with the development of One Acute Network. There will be significant capital investment enabling a new build critical care at Bournemouth and new theatres at Poole. Bournemouth will become the emergency hospital with Poole providing elective services following an extensive review and consultation on provision of primary and secondary care. This represents an exciting opportunity for all consultants in the Trust to be involved in shaping services for the future.

As part of our commitment to delivering high-quality care across seven days, this post may involve participation in an out-of-hours rota, including evenings, weekends, and/or bank holidays, in accordance with service needs. Any work undertaken outside standard hours/PA's will attract remuneration in line with the respective NHS Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions of Service.

Person Specification:

• Essential Qualifications: Full GMC registration, Fellowship / Membership of the Royal College of Anaesthetists or completed a period of education & training in anaesthesia recognised by PMETB, Completion of CCT training in Anaesthesia.
• Desirable: Previous experience working as a Consultant or ST7 equivalent level, Postgraduate thesis/diploma, Post CCT additional clinical experience.

• Clinical Training & Experience: Knowledge commensurate with the above qualifications and the ability to offer expert opinion on range of problems in both emergency and elective aspects of patients. Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients in theatre and in remote settings including transfers. Ability to perform within a multidisciplinary team.
• Desirable: Relevant subspecialty higher or advanced level training in perioperative medicine, vascular, or ophthalmic anaesthesia.

• Service Quality: Demonstrable interest in risk management and patient safety. Evidence of interest in peri-operative care with aim of optimising patient pathway. Evidence of interest in quality assurance. Evidence of successful involvement in quality improvement work. Interest in developing the service aligned to the needs of our patients.
• Desirable: Project led a service development programme from research to implementation.

• Management & Administration: Ability to advise on the effective organisation of an anaesthetic service. The ability to manage and lead a multidisciplinary team. Evidence of participation in Appraisal/Revalidation. Evidence of good self-organisational skills and timekeeping.
• Desirable: Attendance to a leadership or management course.

• Teaching Experience: Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates. Ability to teach practical skills in anaesthesia.
• Desirable: Relevant Teaching Qualification.

• Research & Audit: Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems. Evidence of having undertaken projects in clinical audit. Evidence of successful audited change management. Have a full understanding and have participated in clinical trials relevant to the speciality. Ability to critically appraise published studies.
• Desirable: Publications in specialist Anaesthetic or Critical Care journals.

• Personal Attributes: A strong patient focus, honesty, integrity and reliability, flexibility to adapt to service needs and ability to cope with change, friendly & enquiring, critical approach to work, resilience and remain calm under pressure, caring attitude to patients & staff, excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses, and other healthcare workers, commitment to maintaining own appraisal and revalidation requirements, able to travel to meet the requirements of the post and on call commitments, willingness to work in partnership with management, willingness and ability to integrate fully with Consultant colleagues in Anaesthesia and other specialties, willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national level, willingness to accept the need to implement trust, directorate and departmental priorities.
