Blood Transfusion Senior Biomedical Scientist in Norwich

Eastern Pathology Alliance (EPA) is a fully formed network of The Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, James Paget University Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn. This post is based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. At NNUH the Transfusion lab processes approx. 60,000 samples per annum and provides a full 24/7 service to the hospital. The department uses Grifols Erytra analysers and associated BTM middleware. Currently, the department uses Telepath LIMS and is looking to upgrade this. Haemonetics Blood Tracking system is in place for the control of blood fridges and bedside administration of components. The post holder will be part of a larger network team led by the Network Blood Transfusion Manager, and supported by the EPA quality team.

Main duties of the job

• Advanced Health Care Scientist with experience and specialist knowledge in Transfusion Science and the requirements of the BSQR and ISO15189.
• To meet standards required to achieve and maintain all aspects of BSQR standards as inspected by the MHRA and ISO 15189 as assessed by UKAS.
• Ensures the Laboratory systems are functioning correctly in order to provide clear and appropriate reports in a format that allows the service users/clients access to accurate and updated patient care test results and traceability records.
• As specialised staff, they will be required to train and demonstrate methodologies to medical staff, clinical scientists, other BMS staff, new entrant staff, students and medical laboratory assistants (MLA).
• There may be a requirement to support in other areas within the service as required.

Job responsibilities

• Communicates complex clinical scientific service related test information to managers, consultants, nurses, other health care colleagues, patients and patient carers.
• Answers complex telephone inquiries from pathology users, patients and patient carers about test results and provides information that is highly complex about methodologies and service requirements.
• Explains complex results and reassures the users that the information is correct when results do not agree with the clinical presentation and investigates.
• Responsible for problem solving in their specialist field.
• Manages own work and supervises day-to-day routine work in their specialised service.
• Involved directly in the development and maintenance of standards as necessary for continuing UKAS accreditation and MHRA compliance.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• Essential: MSc Biomedical Sciences or equivalent (Significant experience Specialist BMS)
• State registration with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
• Develop skills and demonstrate continued competence to practice

Experience

• Essential: Has advanced specialist knowledge of the assays performed within their service
• Understands clinical analyser performance evaluation to include complex instrumentation
• Develop knowledge and skills of how to problem solve complex clinical scientific and technical problems
• Has developed a comprehensive knowledge, understanding and ability to use current laboratory software

Skills

• Essential: Has a good working knowledge of LIMS and other transfusion systems and validation processes
• Understands clinical analyser performance evaluation to include complex instrumental
